“Empty your pockets!" an angry Flynn shouted at the maid.

"Mr. McQueen, I don't know what you're talking about," Carmen replied.

“Bullshit. I saw you slip it into your pocket. Now let's see it."

"I don't have anything in my pocket. You've made a mistake. And I'm not feeling comfortable."

"I don't give a good goddamn if you’re comfortable or not. Let's see what's in your pockets."

The muscles in Carmen’s jaw flexed, and she shifted like she was ready to bolt for the door. "I don't have to tolerate this. I'm leaving."

She spun around, and Flynn grabbed her arm and pulled her close. He snarled at her and, in a low voice, said, “You're going to empty your pockets right now!"

The commotion had drawn a small crowd. Sebastian climbed into the salon from the below-deck guest quarters, wearing board shorts and a beach towel draped over his shoulder. Sunglasses covered his eyes.

"What seems to be the problem?" I asked, stepping close.

"She's been stealing from me!” Flynn said, pointing a finger at Carmen. “Stuff’s been going missing for months. All the movie memorabilia I've collected over the years. It's slowly drifting away."

"This is a violation of my rights," Carmen said.

"If you don't have anything to hide, why won't you show me what's in your pockets?" Flynn said with triumph.

"Let go of my arm. This is assault."

"I'm calling the cops,” Flynn said. “Let's see whose side they take."

Fear bathed Carmen’s eyes.

I flashed my badge as a reminder, even though I had no authority here. “Let’s see what's in your pockets. You can empty them now or in front of the authorities."

Carmen swallowed hard. After a moment’s hesitation, she dug into her pocket and pulled out a gold, engraved lighter.

Flynn smiled with victory. "Ha! Busted!"

He snatched the lighter from her palm.

"I wasn't stealing it, I swear. I just wanted to show it to a friend. She's a big fan."

Flynn didn't buy it for a second. "This is the lighter from Scoundrels in the Shadows.” He explained to me, “I found several of my items for sale at an online auction site. They could only have come from one place. She’s stolen several hundred thousand dollars’ worth of memorabilia over the last few months."

Dread filled Carmen’s eyes.

"She took a pool ball from The Gambit, a dagger from the Curse of the Golden Temple. My leather jacket from Escape from El Dorado. God knows what else she's taken."

Paralyzed with fear, Carmen said nothing.

"Pack your stuff,” Flynn growled at her. “You're fired! And I want all of my things back."

"Please, Mr. McQueen. Don't call the police. I will return everything. I promise."

“What about the stuff you’ve already sold?”

“I’ll pay you for it. I’ll do anything,” she continued to plead with him. "I just can't go to jail."

"I just don't understand why you would do this to me. You've worked for me for years."

Carmen's eyes filled. "I needed the money." She frowned. "My sister is ill. Her treatment and medication are expensive."

It could have been BS.

"Why didn't you tell me you needed money?" Flynn asked.
